Diabetes

For several years, I would semi-joke that I was an undiagnosed diabetic.  After my trip to the burn ward, I am now a diagnosed diabetic.  The good news is that with a low-carb diet, weight loss, exercise and oral Metformin, I would not have to monitor blood sugar and use insulin for years.

Exercise has been put on hold for weeks while healing my graft.  I have started my new low-carb way of life and taking Metformin at a beginning dosage.

I am grateful to have this window of opportunity to avoid becoming an insulin dependent diabetic.

Home At Last

After 9 days in the burn ward at Harborview, I made it home.  Time to elevate my burn for several more weeks.

I am grateful for great medical treatment and to be home.

The Burn Ward at Harborview

Went to Harborview ER last Tuesday to check into the burn ward.  Got skin graft on Thursday.  Wound was wrapped in a vacuum device until Monday.  The graft looked great.  Will presumably go home on Thursday or Friday.  Visiting nurse will change the dressing once a day for at least a few weeks.

I am grateful to get treatment for a burn at one of the world's best burn wards.

Possible Timeout

Going to Harborview ER to get the burn on my foot treated tomorrow AM.  Might be kept overnight or for a couple of days.  If I don’t post for a day or two, I will be at the burn ward.

I am grateful for a world-class burn treatment center that is only 15 minutes away.  Experience has proven that 3rd rate treatment is not the way to go.

Reliable Electricity

As long as I have lived in/near downtown Bellevue, my power has never gone out for more than a couple of minutes and rarely even resets the digital clocks.  My urban legend to explain this is that we are on the Overlake Hospital section of the power grid.  Chances are good that is true, but I don’t really know.

By anecdotal example, I can think of twice in the last 20 years that people on the Eastside lost power for up to a week.  Neither time did my clocks even reset.

A fair-sized windstorm is predicted for tonight and the early morning that is projected to lead to lots of power-outages.  I expect we will have electricity all night long and certainly in time to watch the Seahawks play the Green Bay Packers in the NFC championship game tomorrow.

I am grateful for extremely reliable power.  I would not do well in a cold unheated apartment.

Overheated

I use a small electric heater to keep me warm when at my PC in the winter.  The last heater died three weeks ago.  I got a new one at Home Depot that is a ceramic case instead of plastic.  Turns out it puts out hotter air.  Burned the outside of my right ankle last night while writing.

Got an appointment for the burn clinic at Harborview in 11 days.  I will presumably go into their ER on Monday.  This sucks.  Fortunately it is not physically painful, but there is some psychic pain in that it has been a long time since I was directly responsible for having screwed-up causing damage like this.

I will likely be home-bound for the best part of a month waiting for this to heal—if all goes well.   At least I am over the flu.

I am grateful it is not worse.

A Good Day and Now

I don’t feel so good.  Earlier I was castigating myself for not having gone to a meeting and swimming.  Now all of a sudden, I am slightly nauseous.

Tomorrow I will go see my regular doctor for my monthly anti-coagulant check.  We will talk about this week’s malady while I am meeting with her.

I love my Dr Lucy and am grateful to have ready access to world-class healthcare.  The UW Medical Center is routinely ranked as the second-best place in the US for physical (rehab) medicine to treat things like spinal cord injuries.

Feeling Better

I am feeling okay after five days of a mild, yet still unpleasant, bout of the flu.  I spent the last five days resting at home which was good to help me recover from the flu.

Spending time isolating alone at home is counter-productive to my addiction recovery.   My roommates were not much help on the socialization department.  Thank god for free Kindle books from the library and other web sources, my two cats, a king-size bed and a giant TV.  I like reading while sick a lot more than watching TV, but it is good to have choices and switch around for a change of pace.

I am grateful to be feeling better and for only having had a mild case of the flu that did not require hospitalization or other medical care.  I look forward to getting back to meetings, swimming and friends.

Mostly Better

Spent the whole day at home today in an effort to rid myself completely of my flu-like inflection.  I am mostly better with a mild headache, extra neuralgia in my hips and a slight chest cold.

My friend Mike had a similar ailment, got better, went out and about, then came down with heavier symptoms.  I strongly wish to avoid that experince.

I had not taken Acetaminophen in over a year.  It was a surprisingly great help in mitigating my aches and pains to a tolerable level.

I am grateful to be better, for cold & flu meds and to have the luxury of being able to stay home in a warm bed while recuperating.

More Flu

Still feeling a bit of the flu.

I am grateful it is not a LOT worse.

Flu-ish

Felt poorly yesterday and today.  Acetaminophen has helped.

I am grateful for flu shots, over the counter medications and warm blankets.

A Change In Writing Intent

Believe it or not, I tried to write about people and relationships more than things.  Lately it has become a more difficult task to write about people and relationships on a level that will result in my projecting this to be such an onerous task that I give up writing.  Nobody wants that, least of all me.

As a way of making writing easier, I am going to tend strongly towards writing about things that I am grateful for while easing my focus on people and relationships.

The Seahawks beat the Carolina Panthers 31-17 tonight.  They are the first defending Superbowl champions to win a playoff game since 2005.  It was fun to watch our home team kick butt.  At the end of the game, they flashed on Seahawks owner Paul Allen in his owners box.  I did feel a moment of gratitude to him for keeping the Seahawks in Seattle and having the wherewithal to come up with a really good team for the last several years.

I am grateful the Seahawks won and for a change in focus that will make writing much less of a task for me to have to do.

Spicy Hot Food

I loved spicy hot food from a young age when Grandma would pepper the heck out of my fried eggs.  I maxed out on hotness in my twenties living in Honolulu and Santa Barbara.  Now I am a 3 out of 5 stars guy when ordering at restaurants due to variations in the cooks interpretations in that means.  After that, I frequently add chili peppers, wasabi or whatever to bring it up to snuff.

Part of the deal is that I have messed up sinuses.  Spicy hot clears my sinuses so that I can breathe freely which is always a wonderful feeling compared with having a sense of restricted nasal breathing.  There is a strong incentive to go for hot and breathing.

The Seahawks are playing the Carolina Panthers in a playoff game on Saturday evening.  I am looking forward to snacking on nachos with lots of medium hot salsa.  My go-to salsa is the Costco house brand with a good dash of rooster (Sriricha) sauce mixed in.

I am grateful for tasty hot spices that I love to eat and for better breathing.

Road Trip To Monroe

Being the second Thursday of the month, it was time for our monthly meeting at the prison in Monroe.  We had a great conversation on the way out there, a meeting filled with recovery and hope, and a nice talk on the way home.

I am grateful for the friendships I have made with Lisa and Leslee as we help carry the message of recovery to inmates working to build a better life for themselves.

Checking In

Got a good case of writer’s block tonight.  There are many things I appreciate very much in my life, but do not feel like writing about now.  Having just finished making, eating and cleaning up a chicken alfredo dinner, it is easy to imagine that has something to do with being in a mild food coma.

Today was a good day.  Went swimming in the morning, then to a men’s meeting (which I rarely attend) and then ran some errands with Lea.

It has been almost record warm temperatures for January.  The record temps are in the high 50s.  From Tuesday to Friday, it will be in the low to mid 50s with sunny skies after the fog burns off.  That is fantastically better than “dangerously cold air” with wind chills as cold as 20-30 below from the mid-west to in the Northeast

I am grateful for time with friends, a nice swim and warm weather.

Not As Delusional As Kirby Delauter

Being a daily writer, I am always on the lookout for something of note to write about.  It is great to have things that I am grateful for.  Another aspect of gratitude is for things to avoid.  It would be too easy/common to write about not having famine, pestilence and war.  Occasionally somebody pops up with Darwin Award level stupidity.  Here is today’s candidate.

Official's threat to keep name out of print backfires badly
Kirby Delauter might need to rethink his strategy for keeping his name out of print.

By DAVID DISHNEAU
Associated Press

Kirby Delauter might need to rethink his strategy for keeping his name out of print.

The Frederick County, Maryland, councilman's name was published Tuesday in newspapers, websites, news and opinion blogs and seemingly every corner of the Internet after he threatened to sue his local newspaper if it dared to publish his name without his permission.

"Use my name again unauthorized and you'll be paying for an attorney," the Republican official told a Frederick News-Post reporter in a Facebook post.

The paper responded by ridiculing his demand.

"I just don't know how to respond to a request that stupid," Terry Headlee, managing editor of the 33,000 daily circulation newspaper, told The Associated Press on Tuesday in a telephone interview.

The News-Post did respond by posting an advance look at its Sunday editorial on the newspaper's website. It pointed out that Delauter's demand ignores, among other things, the First Amendment right of a free press.

But the newspaper could not resist mining the rich opportunities for sarcasm that Delauter's demand offered.

There was the editorial's headline: "Kirby Delauter, Kirby Delauter, Kirby Delauter."

And the body of the editorial, describing the laughter that his demand provoked and exploring the ways The News-Post might henceforth refer to Delauter without using his name. Perhaps "K---- D-------." Or "Councilman (Unauthorized)."

Capping it off, the first letter of each paragraph spelled out: K-I-R-B-Y-D-E-L-A-U-T-E-R.

Mocking messages filled Twitter with the hashtag #kirbydelauter, which was trending among the top 10 most popular subjects in the U.S. on Tuesday evening.

A Google search for the name Kirby Delauter on Tuesday evening turned up more than 37,000 results.

Delauter, a general contractor, didn't respond to telephone and email messages from The Associated Press.

News-Post county government reporter Bethany Rodgers -- the subject of Delauter's ire -- tweeted that the councilman didn't mention his sudden notoriety during opening comments at a council meeting Tuesday.

Delauter had objected to a recent story by Rodgers that said Delauter shared another councilman's concern about a shortage of reserved parking spaces for councilmembers at the county office building. Delauter wrote in his Facebook post that he had refused to be interviewed for the story because Rodgers had misrepresented his comments in the past.

This isn't the first time Delauter's quick temper and belligerent style have brought him unflattering attention during his four years as a county official. He stormed out of a board meeting in 2012 after telling a county staff member, "I'm not going to sit here and be talked to like some punk because I'm asking questions." Rodgers reported last year that Delauter called another board member a "moron" for disagreeing with him on an issue.

Headlee said it's the newspaper's job to hold elected officials accountable by name for their words and deeds.

"If he doesn't want to be held accountable, he needs to seriously consider whether he's cut out to serve the public," Headlee said.

Even if Delauter does sue, a lawsuit wouldn't likely go far.

Washington Post blogger Eugene Volokh, who teaches free speech law at the University of California in Los Angeles, wrote online Tuesday: "In our country, newspapers are actually allowed to write about elected officials (and others) without their permission."

I am grateful that I and my local political representatives have a much better grasp of trying to censor the internet Kirby Delauter. This is a grand example of the “Streisand Effect

Lies of Omission

A friend asked me for a ride to the store.  Once there, they got caught shoplifting a $1 item whilst having $100 cash in their pocket.  After all that, they insisted that I keep their dirty little secret until they come clean with others. No more rides to store to suck me into their shoplifting schemes.   It was clearly far and away about changing the way they feel over a dire need for some $1 trinket.

I can see that this is not going to go well.  .  Nearly three years, lies of omission concerning my thoughts and feelings were a huge part of a months-long relapse.  I am not going to carry their secret long for them.  Instead they will be held accountable for their actions.

While I surely continue to have my own lies of omission these days, I don’t use stealing as a way to change how I feel and I am not trying to coerce others to tell lies (of omission) so I can save face.  Years ago Merri told me that I can save my face or save my ass, but I can’t do both.

I am grateful for having 10 months sober on the 5th and for not having nearly so many lies of omission that keep me from having close relationships with others.

Spirituality and Religion

It has been said—undoubtedly by the not-religious—that religion is for those who are afraid of going to hell and that spirituality is for those that have been there.  It has to be nice to have a strong positive sense of community within your church.  I have too many issues with authority that always blocked religion from working for me when I tried going to church.

Michelle, Lea and I have been doing a morning meditation with readings from various sources.  I like 12-step literature and meditation  readings on mindfulness and loving kindness.  They have been reading from a “Christian” book that I can’t listen to any more.  The book slut-shames women for having an abortion or other poor mothering choices without ever acknowledging male malfeasance.  I pointed out it is sexist class warfare on poor women.  They see it differently.  It is bizarre to me that they enjoy reading literature which attacks poor less-educated women like themselves without even being able to acknowledge it as sexist or income-based.  It is not my job to prove discrimination to them or educate them on what constitutes oppression.

We have gone our separate ways on meditation readings.  It would be impossible for me to hear white males espousing hatred slut-shaming poor women as a way to start my day on an even keel of love, tolerance, kindness and generousity.  We obviously have a vastly different comprehension of the same words.

I am working my way through a Dalai Lama book on compassion and empathy, along with another book on loving kindness for a morning reading.

I am doing much better at having different world view from others while still loving them for who they are.  In the past, this sort of thing would be cause of fight, flight or shutdown.  Today is just reading different things in different rooms.

I am grateful to be much more tolerant and accepting of others perceptions today without having to force my perception on them while still being engaged in a meaningful supportive relationship.

Not Quite NY Resolutions

I will strive to participate in more relationships this year, swim 3x/week and eat more veggies with less meat.  That is not quite on par with NY Resolutions, but they are worthy ideals to strive for.  If I miss a day, week or month, I will to continue try to meet those ideals.

In recent New Years, I have done 21 days to a new habit and other life changing strategies.  They worked exactly as well as I worked them.  I am optimistic that efforts to be more engaged with others, more exercise and a healthy change in diet will work better for me than not trying at all.

I am grateful for a simple plan that supports personal improvement on a progress not perfection that is simple to understand.  Implementation, as always, will remain a challenge!

We Survived the Holidays

My friend Merri calls the time from Halloween to January 2nd “the mean season” due to the emotional body blows so many of us suffer from dealing with the chasm between expectations of Norman Rockwell families and reality.  It is tough enough for people with relatively healthy families.  For those of us coming from dysfunctional families filled with alcohol, sex, and drug abuse combined with random violence, the holidays are somewhere between fearful and insanely stressful.

I am grateful to have made it through the holidays with no permanent damage due to emotional meltdowns, especially those caused by holiday stressors.   It was a pretty good holiday season with a lot of healthy new behavior and only a little of the dysfunctional old behaviors.

2015 – Day One

This morning was a slow start to the New Year.  My wheelchair will occasionally hit the dome light switch on headliner of my car.  If I don’t catch it in a couple hours my car won’t start due to a dead battery.  That happened this morning for the first time in a long time—maybe even a year.  I have battery powered jump starter device that did not work today.  We missed the morning meeting.  I had to watch college football bowl games all morning.

Michelle’s friend came over this afternoon.  While she was here, they jump-started my car.  Lea and I went to the end of a noon meeting and came home to…more football.

It was arguably the best day ever for college football.  For the first time, there were two playoff games to determine a championship between the top four teams.  In a battle of Heisman Trophy winning quarterbacks, #2 Oregon spanked #3 Florida 59-20 in the Rose Bowl.  #4 Ohio State won a thriller over #1 Alabama 42-35.  Oregon will play Ohio State on the 12th to crown a champion.  Wisconsin beat Auburn 34-31 in overtime and Michigan State beat Baylor 42-41.

I just emailed the manufacturer of the jump starter device.  They might fix it by sending me a new battery or I might buy a better one.  It is darned handy to have an immediate solution to a dead battery caused by my wheelchair hitting the dome light which only happens when parked overnight at home.  If I have to buy a new one, I will get a more powerful model that hopefully lasts longer than 3+ years.

Now it is time to read some new books on my Kindle.

I am grateful for the entertainment I got from college football, eating King crab legs, having a green salad, not being stressed by minor car problems that can be easily fixed with enough time and a nice warm place to sleep tonight during freezing weather.
